Dr Stepan Stepanenko is a political analyst with a robust academic foundation and experience in British politics. Stepan seamlessly integrates his deep historical knowledge, gained through academic pursuits, with his expertise in Eastern European and post-Soviet political landscapes, complemented by practical political experience, including significant contributions to think tanks and organisations dedicated to promoting democracy in totalitarian states.
Stepan began his career in academia, working for six years as a copy editor with various academic publishers in the European Union. This role honed his skills in research, analysis, and effective communication, laying a strong foundation for his later transition into political research.
From the age of 16, Stepan joined a political party in the UK and subsequently ran for election in the London Borough of Barnet. His early involvement in politics demonstrated his commitment to public service and democratic engagement. The large-scale invasion of Ukraine marked a significant turning point, leading Stepan to focus more intensively on political research and analysis.
As a member of the Belarusian opposition’s Coordination Council, Stepan served on the foreign affairs committee, contributing to discussions on regional security and international relations. He left the Coordination Council due to concerns over organisational transparency, continuing his efforts through other avenues.
Stepan has provided evidence to multiple UK parliamentary committees on topics including the war in Ukraine, the UK's stance on Iran, defence strategies, and the activities of the Wagner Group. His policy briefs and research papers on defence procurement and British engagement in Eastern Europe and the Pacific have been shaping informed policy decisions. Additionally, Stepan has participated in high-profile fact-finding missions for UK parliamentarians and media organisations, reinforcing his role as a trusted expert.
As a correspondent for the Kyiv Post, Stepan offers insightful perspectives that bridge historical context with contemporary political developments. He also contributed to the Daily Express, Mail Online, Epoch Times, US Sun, Jerusalem Post, and Times of Israel among other media. His expertise featured on British national media platforms, including the BBC, GB News, TalkTV, and LBC Radio, where he provides informed commentary on defence and national security issues.
Dr Stepanenko is also a Humbldt Foundation Fellow, director of research and strategy of the Forum for Foreign Relations think tank, and director of the Forward Strategy Ltd consultancy. In August 2024, he was sanctioned by the Russian Federation, underscoring his impactful work and dedication to promoting transparency and security in the region.
